15. Outdoors on our open deck -
the only existing rail cars with outside observation platforms...
I spent most of the trip out there...
this was a private car that we paid extra for but there were only about 60 of us up there
and below we had our own private dining.....the only way to go....
there were 16 cars behind us made up mainly of cruise ship cars....
we were able to go back thru the train but no one could come up to ours....
the food was good...
it was about an 9 hour ride to Denali Nat'l Park where we got off and spent 2 days ...
we took a 90 mile trip into the park

16Di, Elsie & Kirk 17View of valley 18Mt McKinley center in back 19Grey Wolf

16 - we were waiting for our bus to dinner and stage show... we were sitting in front of the Grand Denali Lodge... that building had a large restaurant, cafe, gift shop, and check-in desk....

17 - view of the valley we came through on the train to get to Denali Nat'l Park, awsome views like this everytime you look in a different direction

18 - Mt McKinley is dead center top....part of the range is to the left..the whole range makes the others look like foot hills...this is where the bus turns around 90 miles into park, you can see road just at Kirk's forehead, that goes to Wonder Lake but would have been another 2 hours on the bus....we spent 8 hours as it was , glad we didn't add the other 4 hours...just above Diane in the shaded light green was a herd of Caribou....

19 - the bus stopped and this female grey wolf came nonchalantly walking by, she had a collar on so they can track their locations... she gave birth to 7 pups in the spring....we felt quite lucky to see a wolf as there are only 125-130 in the park....over 600,000 acres..

Here is some of what Ron wrote:

We just loved Alaska and will be hard pressed not to go back soon....
Di said if we were 30 years younger we would be packing the wagons.....I agree...
most beautiful place we have ever been....
we saw Mt. McKinley on 3 different days .... how beautiful and majestic...
highest point in the northern continent...
the train was beautiful and the only way to go....
we stayed in 5 star hotel at Alyeska Ski Resort.....had never done that before.....
rode the rafts to the Glacier and sailed with the Orca's ...
could write a book....
I bought a new camera for the trip...
had a 512mb card in it and had it set for 1.8 megapixal...
I could have taken 1380 pics on it but only managed to get about 1075 taken.....
have dwindled that down to 529 now.... lot of dups. and blurrs.....
